Introduction
The dendryphantines are among the commonnest and most diverse jumping spiders of the New World (considerably less diverse in the Old World). Included are genera such as Phidippus, Metaphidippus, Eris, Dendryphantes, Tutelina, and Hentzia. Generally the females show paired spots on the abdomen, and the males often have enlarged chelicerae.
Characteristics
Maddison (1988, 1996) proposed three characters derived within the family as synapomorphies of the subfamily:
- Carina on the ventrolateral edge of the basal segment of the male chelicerae:Click on an image to view larger version & data in a new window
- Coil of embolus folded back so as to be hidden behind the basal part of the embolus, so that the coiling is usually only visible from the back of the embolus:Click on an image to view larger version & data in a new window
- Epigynal openings S-shaped, with entry toward the lateral in the anterior half and toward the medial in the posterior half:Click on an image to view larger version & data in a new window
