Maculinea currently viewed as a subjective junior synonym
Andrew V. Z. BrowerThis tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.
The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.
You can click on the root to travel down the Tree of Life all the way to the root of all Life, and you can click on the names of descendent subgroups to travel up the Tree of Life all the way to individual species.

close boxIntroduction
This is the famous Eurasian ant-associated genus of blues, including the endangered "large blue," "Maculinea" arion. Late instar larvae descend into ant hills of the genera Myrmica and Aphaenogaster and consume the larvae and pupae. Much of the conservation-related literature for this genus will refer to it as "Maculinea."
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Phylogenetic relationships as inferred from combined molecular and morphological evidence by Fric et al. (2007). Note that the former genus Maculinea, which included the European species M. arion and M. rebeli (now viewed as a synonym/subspecies of P. alcon), represents both basal and derived members of Phengaris. The type species of Maculinea is P. alcon, so even if Maculinea were retained as a distinct genus, it would not contain the charismatic European species P. arion.
