Galiteuthis
Richard E. Young and Katharina M. Mangold (1922-2003)Galiteuthis contains five recognized species, but Voss, et al. (1992) suggests that an additional one or two species exist.
This tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.
The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.
You can click on the root to travel down the Tree of Life all the way to the root of all Life, and you can click on the names of descendent subgroups to travel up the Tree of Life all the way to individual species.

close boxIntroduction
Some species, at least, of Galiteuthis reach a large size of 660 mm ML (Nesis, 1982, suggests that they may reach a size of 2.7 m ML). Species are easily recognized by the hooks on the tentacular clubs while lacking hooks on the arms, and the long, slender, terminal fins.
Brief diagnosis:
A taoniin ...
- with club armature mostly in two series and consisting of large hooks.
- with long, lanceolate, terminal fins.
Characteristics
- Tentacles
- Tentacular clubs with large hooks.*
- Clubs with equally developed dorsal and ventral protective membranes; club keels absent.
- Two series of suckers and pads on distal 2/3 to 3/4 of tentacular stalk.
- Funnel
- Funnel valve absent.
- Funnel organ: Dorsal pad with three flattened papillae.
- Mantle
- Tubercles present or absent at the funnel-mantle fusion depending on species.
- Fins
- Fins lanceolate, terminal (see title illustration); anterior insertion on shell sac.
- Photophores
- Two ocular photophores: Medial photophore with crescent-shaped photogenetic region; Lateral photophore with short, slightly curved photogenetic region that lies within the concavity of the first.
- Arm tip photophores absent.
*Unusual within family, shared only with Mesonychoteuthis (but see condition in Taonius).
Comments
The distinctive hooks of the tentacular clubs first appear at 35-60 mm ML (Voss, et al., 1992). Characteristics are from Voss (1980).
Distribution
Members of this genus are found circumglobally in all oceans except the Arctic Ocean (Nesis, 1982).
