The genus consists of two species, one of which (B. magister) is believed to consist of three subspecies.

This tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.

The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.

Berryteuthis contains two species of very different sizes. B. magister which reaches a length of nearly 40 cm ML while most adult B. anonychus are near 10 cm ML.

  1. Arms
    1. Armature of the arms differs greatly between species.

  2. Tentacles
    1. Tentacles present.
    2. Tentacular clubs without hooks.
    3. Suckers of tentacular club in numerous irregular series; suckers about equal in size.
    4. Proximal locking-apparatus of club a series of knobs and suckers along dorsal margin of manus.
