Aleochara (Echochara)
Christian Maus and James S. Ashe (1947-2005)- Aleochara lobata
- Aleochara lucifuga
- Aleochara ocularis
- Aleochara fenyesi
Characteristics
The Echochara species are characterized by: the distinct microsculpture on the forebody; more or less narrowly elongate body shape; and mesosternum not carinate.
Identification Guides
The species of this subgenus can be identified with the key of KLIMASZEWSKI (1984).
Bionomics
Echochara species are associated with caves and with animal burrows (prairie dog, groundhog, fox) (KLIMASZEWSKI 1984, KLIMASZEWSKI & PECK 1986). Host species and development are not known.
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Phylogenetic relationships within this subgenus have not been investigated. Since no certain autapomorphies of Echochara are known, the monophyly of this heterogenous group is uncertain. It is not clear that the genitalic features that KLIMASZEWSKI 1984 states to be typical for this subgenus are unique autapomorphic features.
